I have no idea what possessed me to make this, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Pyramid Head is easily the most interesting antagonist from the Silent Hill games, and I have yet to see a well made costume of the character, so I figured I'd take a crack at it. I'm pretty happy with the way it came out, especially considering that this is the first time I've tried my hand at costume making. Now I just need to figure out what the hell to do with the thing, other than wearing it to a Halloween party, I guess.

I realize that this costume is in gross violation of the Cosplay Obsessive Accuracy Treaty of 1983, since I am freely combining elements from both the game and the movie. There are two reasons for this. First, I thought Pyramid Head's helmet looked far more menacing in the movie, but in all other respects I preferred the design of the outfit he wore in the game. The second reason is that the movie incarnation wore only a skirt, and I really don't have the build to pull that off. (To be fair, neither did the actor who portrayed him in the film: they used prosthetic muscles.) Click here to see a few close-ups of the helmet, which looks better than is apparent in this photo.

In case it wasn't glaringly obvious, the background is fake. I took the original photo in my apartment, which lacks the right ambiance for this costume, to say the least.

Media: poster board, foam core, acrylic paint, styrofoam, rope, various fabrics, assorted other crap

screw the "cosplay excessive accuray treaty" this is an awesome interpretation. you look scary as hell. i cant stand it when cosplayers get so hung up on details they pass up doing something totally awesome. technical question: did you powder your arms or is that just the lighting(or are you really pale ^_^)?
:iconbootid:
Holy crap, that's awesome, Jim. And if you paint the whole thing peach and put eyes on it, I bet you could easily turn it into a spy-vs-spy character.
:iconegnirysfaye:
That is great! If not halloween you should deffinatly go to conventions like that! Kudos on the work.

What material did you use for the head part? My friend is planning on cosplaying him as well.

lol, the movie PH wore an apron and had really weird feet... Did you make the helmet so that you could actually see in front of you? In this picture, you almost look like you're from the game. Is your spear real? (his knife is a pain in the ass, so I can see why you haven't made it (yet))

People always wonder what he looks like under his mask, and I think you've finally hit on the right answer. :)
:iconcruftforce7:
Thanks much! The answer to your question is: none of the above. To make my arms paler in the photo, I cheated and selectively desaturated them in Photoshop. If I were wearing this costume for an event, I would use powder or makeup of some kind, but I didn't feel like getting my arms all messy if I didn't have to. Mind you, I didn't have to make them much paler than they already are. (I'm a computer programmer; need I say more? :))

Thanks! For the helmet, I mostly used foam core, then overlaid it with wrinkled tissue paper to get a textured effect and to hide the seams. The bolts and other doodads on the surface are made out of styrofoam, for the most part.
:iconcruftforce7:
Yes, I can see out of the helmet to a limited extent, but not directly in front of me. I made the side panels look like wire mesh (instead of the array of bolts that they used in the movie) so that it would be easier to hide a few small eye holes. I also used a sheer black fabric behind the eye holes so that they aren't immediately obvious when you see the helmet from the outside.

The spear is real in the sense that it is a physical object, but fake in the sense that the head is made out of styrofoam. You're right about the knife: it would be a total pain in the ass to make and lug around, so I decided not to bother with it.
:iconlynxeh:
lol, okay, Very nice handy work on the spear too then (The whole image looks rendered and not like a human due to the lighting and masking onto a different background, that's why I asked).
